New Delhi, 8 August: Around 42 per cent children under the age of five in India are underweight. While in urban areas, 32.7 per cent were underweight, in rural India the corresponding figure was 45.6 per cent, Parliament was informed.
Giving the information in the RS, Women and Child Development Minister Krishna Tirath said around 35 per cent of women in the age group of 15-49 suffer from chronic energy deficiency which is measured as low body mass index. The causes include inadequate consumption of food, frequent infection and others. ians
