Ten persons were killed and 31 were injured, including half a dozen critically, about an hour after they were returning from attending a function of Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav, when their bus collided head-on with a pick-up truck in the Chhindwara district of the state late on Thursday evening.
According to Chhindwara SP Ajay Pandey, the mishap occurred near Simaria on Nagpur Road.
“Six men, three women and a child were killed in the accident,” the SP informed.
Of the seriously injured, one person was rushed to a hospital in Nagpur in neighbouring Maharashtra for advanced treatment.
The bus was carrying more than 40 passengers at the time of the accident.

CM Dr Mohan Yadav had addressed a public event about an hour before the accident occurred. He had announced development works worth more than Rs 500 crore for Chhindwara district.
All persons in the bus that met with the mishap had attended the CM’s function and were returning.
On getting information about the mishap, CM Dr Yadav expressed deep grief.
The CM also announced an ex-gratia compensation of Rs four lakh to the kin of each deceased, and Rs one lakh each to the seriously injured.
The CM said that he had directed officials to ensure proper treatment of the injured and instructed that teams of doctors be sent from Jabalpur to Chhindwara and Nagpur.
