Clean poles

Children can often take one by surprise. A quick retort or thinking leaves one wondering if a smarter generation is growing up. It’s common to see toddlers handling smart-phones or computers with a lot of ease. The older generation, in fact, is all thumbs when they are made to handle these gadgets. But the manner in which children think beyond their parents and come up with gems often leaves one aghast.

A colleague narrated how this trait is often seen in the Metro. She then recounted how a smart-thinking kid outwitted his mother. Pole dancing by children in the Metro is a common sight. Many mothers try to stop their children from this on the grounds that they may fall after getting dizzy or if the train were to start with a jerk or suddenly halt.

Most times children ignore their mothers and continue prancing around the poles. The other day, our colleague heard a young mother telling her little boy the pole was dirty and may soil his hands. The child sat by his mother for a while and then asked for her handkerchief. As soon as the mother gave it to the child, he promptly ran to the nearest pole and began cleaning it up. As the mother loudly protested, the kid turned around and said, “Now the poles are clean. I can go around without getting dirty!”
