The makers of ‘Toxic: A Fairytale for Grown-Ups’ released a new promo on July 1 called ‘Ladies & Ladies’. It was meant to put the spotlight on the film’s five leading actresses. Social media had other thoughts.

The reactions on X have been sharp. Several users called the promo a cringefest. Others used the words total embarrassment. Some went further, accusing the clip of catering entirely to the male gaze and putting women in a negative light.

One user described the voiceover as the cringiest they had heard in their entire life of watching films, TV shows, and audio-visual content. “Cringier than even parody ads and skits,” they added.

The question that came up repeatedly was about the director. Geetu Mohandas is a woman. Several users said they could not reconcile that fact with what they were watching. “I can’t convince myself that this film was written and directed by a woman,” one comment read. “It’s so painfully obvious that this movie is only going to cater to the male gaze.”

Not the first time

This is not the first round of criticism Toxic has faced. The film had already drawn backlash earlier for what some described as obscene scenes. Yash responded to that criticism by defending the film, saying a gangster film with a female gaze was refreshing and crediting director Geetu Mohandas.

The Ladies & Ladies promo has reopened that conversation.

‘Toxic: A Fairytale for Grown-Ups’ releases on August 26, 2026. It is produced by KVN Productions and Monster Mind Creations.
