It was supposed to be a happy throwback moment for Thalapathy Vijay fans. Old memories, loud whistles, packed theatres, and that familiar Vijay swagger on the big screen again. But Tamil cinema had other plans. Just when fans were ready to relive ‘Theri’, the brakes were suddenly applied. And that’s not all. Vijay’s film world right now looks like a traffic jam of delays, courtrooms, and calendar chaos.
What happened to ‘Theri’ re-release plan
The much-hyped re-release of ‘Theri’, one of Vijay’s most loved blockbusters, has been officially postponed. The news came quietly but hit fans hard.
Producer Kalaippuli S Thanu, speaking on behalf of V Creations, made the announcement on X. His message was polite and practical. He said the decision was taken after several producers of upcoming films requested a reshuffle of release dates.
In simple words: too many movies, too little space at theatres.
Why ‘Theri’ producers asked for a pause
According to a statement shared by the ‘Theri’ re-release team, the postponement happened due to coordination issues. Several new films are lining up for release, and adding a big Vijay re-release into the mix could crowd the theatres. Distributors and producers wanted breathing room so that every film gets a fair run.
So, instead of a clash, the ‘Theri’ team stepped back. It’s a rare move in an industry where release dates are guarded like treasure.
And what about ‘Jana Nayagan’?
If fans thought this was the only delay, here comes the bigger drama. Vijay’s upcoming film ‘Jana Nayagan’ is also stuck, and this time, the problem is not scheduling but certification.
‘Jana Nayagan’, which is being promoted as Thalapathy Vijay’s last film before his political journey, was supposed to release on January 9. But the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) put the film on hold, citing concerns that some scenes could hurt religious sentiments.
The makers of ‘Jana Nayagan’, KVN Productions LLP, first approached the Madras High Court. A single-judge bench gave them good news, directing the CBFC to grant the film a U/A 16+ certificate. Fans celebrated early.
But the relief did not last long. The CBFC challenged this order. A division bench of Madras High Court stepped in. On January 9, 2026, the bench stayed the certification freezing the film’s release.
Now producers have taken fight to the Supreme Court. They have filed a plea asking for an ex parte interim stay. This means they want the earlier High Court order paused immediately, even before hearing the other side.
The CBFC is not backing down either. The certification body has filed a caveat in the Supreme Court, clearly stating that no order should be passed without hearing its side. The board has also asked for expert opinions, especially regarding scenes that show the armed forces in the film.
So for now, ‘Jana Nayagan’ remains locked in legal limbo.
