In early 2018, a clip from a Malayalam song stopped the internet cold. A teenager from Thrissur, Kerala, fluttered her eyebrows and winked at the camera. Within hours, Priya Prakash Varrier became an overnight sensation. That one expression earned her the title of India’s National Crush. She was still a student. No film had released. No interview had happened. One wink did the job.
The clip was from ‘Oru Adaar Love’, her 2019 debut Malayalam film. The song went everywhere. Memes followed. So did brand deals, magazine covers, and a follower count that grew by millions in days.
Building a real career after the viral moment
Going viral is easy. Staying relevant is hard. Priya chose to work across industries instead of waiting for Bollywood to come knocking.
In 2025, she made her Tamil debut with ‘Nilavuku En Mel Ennadi Kobam’ directed by Dhanush. She played a character named Preethi. That alone was a statement.
She also appeared in Ajith Kumar’s Tamil action-comedy ‘Good Bad Ugly’, playing a character named Nithya. Her recreation of the classic song “Thottu Thottu Pesum Sultana” went viral and her portrayal received positive audience reception.
Her first Kannada film, Vishnu Priya, released in February 2025. Set in the 1990s, it was a romantic drama directed by VK Prakash. She was expanding her footprint across South Indian cinema, one language at a time.
Her latest release ‘Cousins and Kalyanams’ just released on OTT.
The Ajith connection
After ‘Good Bad Ugly’, Priya visited Ajith Kumar at the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi, where the Tamil superstar was competing in the Asian Le Mans Series 2026 season.
She posted a video from their meeting and described his “pure passion, discipline and fearless dedication.” She thanked him for the warm welcome and called the experience fulfilling.
Priya also described ‘Good Bad Ugly’ as one of her 2025 highlights and called sharing the screen with Ajith in the song “Thottu Thottu Pesum” a memorable and special experience.
The ‘Param Sundari’ Mess
Not everything in 2025 went smoothly. ‘Param Sundari’, starring Sidharth Malhotra and Janhvi Kapoor, became a flashpoint for everything wrong about how Bollywood treats talent.
The film released in theatres on August 29, 2025. It tells a love story between a North Indian boy and a South Indian girl. Soon after release, backlash began over stereotypical portrayals of Malayalis and Keralan culture.
In the middle of that backlash, viewers noticed something else. Priya Prakash Varrier, a real Keralite actress, appeared in a background role in the very film that claimed to represent Kerala. The irony was not lost on anyone.
Fans discovered that Varrier played what was described as a background character with no dialogue. Social media reacted sharply. One Reddit post put it bluntly: Priya Prakash Varrier’s father is not Boney Kapoor, so she could not be the lead.
Then Priya spoke up. She disclosed that she had officially quit project after completing her first day of filming in February 2026. She found major differences between the role she was offered and what she encountered on location. When she asked the production team for clarity on her character’s direction, no answers came.
The footage from her one day on set was used in a song sequence without her knowledge. Most viewers thought she was simply a minor background character.
What’s coming next
She last appeared in a cameo in ‘Sarvam Maya’, directed by Akhil Sathyan. The film starred Nivin Pauly, Riya Shibu, and Aju Varghese. It became a blockbuster and is currently streaming on JioHotstar.
She is also reportedly ready for a special appearance in Ranbir Kapoor’s ‘Ramayana’, directed by Nitesh Tiwari. The first part is slated for Diwali 2026, with the second part following on Diwali 2027.
Beyond the wink tag
Priya has publicly said she wants to shed the “wink girl” tag. Looking at her 2025 work, she is doing exactly that. Tamil debut. Kannada debut. A viral comeback moment with Ajith. A principled exit from a production that did not respect her. And a reported spot in one of the biggest Hindi films ever mounted.
Seven years after one wink changed her life, she is no longer just that girl. She is building something that will outlast the meme.
