The Indian Film Festival of Melbourne has picked R Gowtham’s Tamil film, ‘Members of the Problematic Family’, as its Opening Night film for 2026. It’s a big deal for the movie, which already turned heads at the Berlinale earlier this year.

Dates and details

IFFM runs from August 13 to August 23. The Opening Night screening lands on August 14 in Melbourne. This will also count as the film’s Australian premiere.

Gowtham on the honour

Director R Gowtham didn’t hide his excitement. He called the film deeply personal, one that digs into grief, family, and the quiet struggles every community carries.

He said opening IFFM right after the Berlinale debut means a lot to him. In his words, IFFM has grown into one of the most important stages for Indian cinema abroad. He’s looking forward to bringing the film to Australian audiences, along with his cast.

Gowtham will travel to Melbourne for the festival. Lead actor Karuththadayan will join him for the Opening Night event and the Australian premiere.

Two award nods

The film isn’t just opening the festival. It has also landed two nominations at the IFFM Awards jury competition, in Best Indie Film and Best Director.

What the film is about

At the centre of the story is Prabha, a troubled young man whose sudden death rattles his family and the community around them.

The film plays out over 16 days, the length of a traditional funeral ritual. Prabha’s mother, his uncle, cousins, and various relatives gather to mourn him. But as the days go on, old wounds start surfacing. Buried conflicts, tense relationships, and things left unsaid slowly rise to the top, exposing just how complicated this family really is.

The film doesn’t stop at one tragedy. It looks at how grief hits people differently, how families hold on to old hurts, and how unpredictable people can be when emotions run raw. Gowtham handles it all with a light, honest touch, never pushing the drama further than it needs to go.
