History behind ‘Parasakthi’
‘Parasakthi’ dives deep into a turbulent chapter of Tamil Nadu’s history. The film sheds light on the anti-Hindi imposition protests of 1965. It reportedly talks about tragic events in Pollachi. There the army reportedly fired on more than 250 people protesting against mandatory imposition of Hindi.
Legacy of the original ‘Parasakthi’ (1952)
Tamil cinema enthusiasts cannot help but compare this new film to the legendary ‘Parasakthi’ of 1952. Directed by Krishnan-Panju, the original starred Sivaji Ganesan in his debut role and featured Kalaignar’s dialogues on social reform.
Back then, the movie faced strong opposition. There were calls for ban from both society and the government. Yet, it went on to become a massive, massive hit. It ran for over 175 days in theaters.
Audiences flocked to watch Sivaji’s intense court scenes, sometimes even sitting on theater steps just to catch a glimpse.
The 1952 ‘Parasakthi’ set a benchmark for Tamil cinema.
