JioHotstar rolled out a massive surprise for South Indian audiences on Tuesday with the launch of its shiny new content slate at the grand ‘South Unbound’ event. The evening felt like a celebration of Southern cinema itself with legends Mohanlal, Kamal Haasan, Nagarjuna gracing the stage as the platform unveiled 25 upcoming titles and a long-term plan.

A mega investment for southern stories

JioHotstar announced that it will invest ₹4,000 crore into the South Indian creative economy over the next five years. This is reportedly one of the biggest sums ever by a streaming platform purely for regional content. According to ‘Variety’, the aim is to boost South India’s storytelling power and take its creators global.

The platform has also signed a letter of intent with the Tamil Nadu government to help strengthen the state’s production and creative backbone.

Fresh content, bigger reach

Viewers can expect a whopping 1,500 hours of new South content in the coming year alone. With 400 million users already on JioHotstar, the platform believes this is the perfect time to expand its regional universe.

Krishnan Kutty, head of entertainment (South) at JioStar, expressed pride in the booming creative culture of the region. He said that in just ten months, more than 500 creators, directors, and showrunners have joined hands with the platform each bringing a unique voice that deserves national and international attention.

Tamil Nadu government welcomes the boost

Tamil Nadu’s Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin highlighted how this partnership will help reshape the state’s creative sector. He shared that the initiative could create around 1,000 direct jobs and nearly 15,000 indirect jobs giving a major push to the local economy.

He also emphasised how South Indian cinema has become a cultural force. “A filmmaker in Madurai or Salem can upload a story and reach viewers worldwide,” he said.

Kamal Haasan on the rise of regional power

Cinema icon Kamal Haasan had a powerful message for the audience. He noted that today, regional stories are no longer limited by language or geography.

“Regional is becoming the new national. And ethnic is the new international,” he said.

A slate packed with fan favourites

The upcoming lineup includes new seasons of beloved franchises. They include Kerala Crime Files, Save The Tigers S3, Heartbeat S3, Good Wife S2.

Along with these returning hits, JioHotstar is also introducing an exciting range of new originals. Some of the fresh titles announced include ‘Cousins And Kalyanams’, ‘Moodu Lantharlu’, ‘LBW: Love Beyond Wicket’, ‘Resort’, ‘Secret Stories: ROSLIN’, ‘Lingam’, ‘Vikram On Duty’.
