Thalapathy Vijay’s upcoming blockbuster Jana Nayagan was all ready to hit screens worldwide on January 9, but now fans are biting their nails as the film faces a last-minute hurdle with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) in India.
The film’s journey to the big screen has been anything but smooth, even as UK authorities have already given it a green signal. Vijay fans abroad can catch the action thanks to a ’15’ certificate from the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC). But back home, the fate of the release is still hanging in the balance.
The BBFC certificate clears Jana Nayagan for audiences aged 15 and above. No one younger than 15 can watch it in cinemas or rent it. The board issued a disclaimer warning viewers about strong language, frequent violence, sexual imagery, drug use.
Trouble at Home: CBFC hurdles for Jana Nayagan
In India, the picture is more complicated. On December 29, 2025, Jana Nayagan had initially received a UA 16+ rating due to its gory scenes.
But after a complaint was raised on January 5, the Revision Committee had to review the film again, slowing down the process.
The next hearing will take place on January 7 at the Madras High Court, and the stakes are high. The CBFC invoked Rule 24 of the Cinematograph Certification Rules, which allows complaints related to religious sentiments or depictions of the armed forces.
The producers are pushing hard for release. They are highlighting that over Rs 500 crore is riding on the film which is going to screen on 5,000 screens across India.
They argue that any delay could lead to piracy issues and financial losses especially since the movie was initially going to release on October but later they had to postpone it.
