Director H Vinoth was not there to talk about ‘Jana Nayagan’. He had joined directors Pandiraaj, Pa Ranjith, and choreographer-actor Sandy Master, along with actor Santhosh, on SS Music for a promotional interview for the upcoming Tamil comedy thriller Parimala & Co. At one point during the conversation, the anchor turned to Vinoth and asked the question that Tamil Nadu had been asking for months: when will ‘Jana Nayagan’ release?
The studio audience cheered. Vinoth did not give a date. Instead, he replied: “That is not up to me. I don’t even have the courage to tell you the truth. Even if I had the courage, you wouldn’t have the courage to share it.”
Santhosh and Pa Ranjith laughed. The anchor awkwardly wished him all the best. The clip spread rapidly across social media.

About ‘Jana Nayagan’
‘Jana Nayagan’ is an unreleased Indian Tamil-language political action thriller film directed by H Vinoth and produced by KVN Productions. The film stars Vijay, Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, and Mamitha Baiju, alongside Gautham Vasudev Menon, Prakash Raj, Narain, and Priyamani.
The film was initially planned for an October 2025 theatrical release. Netflix, which acquired the OTT rights, had already locked its 2025 release lineup. To align with the platform’s schedule, the makers opted for a 2026 theatrical release around Pongal. The new target date was set as January 9, 2026.

The CBFC problem
The Pongal release did not happen. The CBFC referred the film to a new panel because of the use of symbols related to the Indian Armed Forces without prior approval. Producer Venkat K Narayana of KVN Productions approached the Madras High Court after the CBFC reportedly stalled the certification despite submitting a revised version with suggested cuts.
KVN Productions released an official statement at the time: “It is with a heavy heart that we share this update with our valued audiences and stakeholders. The release of ‘Jana Nayagan’, eagerly awaited on January 9, has been postponed due to reasons beyond our control.”
Courts step in
The Madras High Court ordered the CBFC to issue a U/A certificate for the film. The CBFC challenged that ruling. A single judge had ordered the CBFC to issue a UA certificate, but the Madras High Court stayed the order after the Board appealed, citing the film’s use of armed forces emblems, which it argued required expert review.
A plea challenging the Madras High Court’s stay was then filed in the Supreme Court by KVN Productions LLP, highlighting the film’s political overtones and its significance as Vijay’s final cinematic outing before he shifts fully into politics with Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam. With the next hearing scheduled for January 21, a pre-Pongal release became impossible.
Five months on, still no certificate
The film had been sent to the revising committee in January right before its release date and has been stalled indefinitely. Nearly five months after its intended Pongal 2026 release, producer Venkat K Narayana spoke to reporters and said they were still waiting for the certificate.
The piracy crisis
While the legal battle continued, the film leaked online. High-definition versions of the entire film reportedly made their way onto piracy websites.
Several voices within the industry suggested the leak may not have been coincidental. Producer G. Dhananjheyan urged the production house to pursue urgent legal action. He also questioned whether Vijay’s final film was being deliberately targeted.
