Tamil actor Ajith Kumar’s mother, Mohini Mani, passed away on May 30 in Chennai. She was 89. The cause of death was age-related health complications. She had been dealing with declining health for several years.
Mohini Mani spent her final days in Chennai, surrounded by close family members. Her death was first confirmed by Cinema Vikatan on Saturday morning. Other Tamil media outlets followed with their own reports soon after.
Ajith Kumar and his team did not release an official statement, but tributes from well-wishers and colleagues began appearing online shortly after the news emerged.
Ajith Kumar had been in Dubai for prior commitments when news of his mother’s deteriorating condition reached him. He rushed back to Chennai to be with his family. He proceeded to his residence in the Injambakkam-Palavakkam area on the outskirts of the city.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay and actress Trisha Krishnan visited Ajith Kumar’s Chennai residence on Saturday evening to pay their respects.

In visuals from the visit, Vijay and Trisha arrived to pay their final respects on Saturday evening. The Tamil Nadu CM went with a flower garland. Ajith Kumar was also seen greeting Vijay and Trisha before they headed inside the house.
Dressed in a simple black salwar suit, Trisha paid her respects and spent time with the grieving family.
CM Vijay also posted a condolence message on social media. He wrote: “I am deeply saddened to hear the news of the passing of Mrs. Mohini Ammaiyar, the mother of my dear friend, actor Thiru. Ajith Kumar. I pray for her soul to rest at feet of the Almighty. I express my deepest condolences to my friend, Thiru. Ajith Kumar, who has lost the mother who stood as a shield and supported him in all walks of life, and to his family.”
Kamal Haasan pays tribute

Veteran actor Kamal Haasan was among the first from the film fraternity to post a public tribute. He wrote on X in Tamil: “I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Mr. Ajith Kumar’s mother, Mrs. Mohini Mani. My condolences to Ajith Kumar and his family, who are grieving loss of their beloved mother.”
Background
Mohini Mani’s death comes three years after passing of Ajith’s father, P Subramaniam, popularly known as PS Mani, who passed away at 85 in March 2023.
PS Mani has three sons: Anup Kumar, Ajith Kumar, Anil Kumar.
