Actor and Rajya Sabha member Shabana Azmi on Sunday denounced the media’s role in the JNU row and urged people of all sections to help bring the situation back to normalcy.

"The media first projected JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar as guilty and is now saying the video (of his speech) was tampered with. Its (media) role in the issue was not good," Azmi said.

"People of all sections of society should come forward to douse the flames emerging out of it. It is the responsibility of all," she said.

The video showing Kumar raising anti-India slogans was broadcast by some news channels. It also went viral on social media and was widely used to condemn the organisers of the controversial event on JNU campus.

Later, another set of news channels had broadcast a different version of the same video, questioning its authenticity.
