The wait is over, warriors. ‘Last Samurai Standing’ is officially returning for Season 2.
Netflix has greenlit a second chapter of the high-stakes historical action series that took the world by storm. Since its debut, the battle royale epic has dominated the charts, climbing to No. 1 on the Netflix Weekly Global Top 10 for Non-English Series and reaching the Top 10 in 88 countries.
It also made history as the first all-Japanese production nominated for a Critics’ Choice Award for Best Foreign Language Series.
About ‘Last Samurai Standing’
Based on Shogo Imamura’s award-winning novel ‘Ikusagami’, the series is set in the late 19th-century Meiji era. It follows 292 samurai, who come together at Kyoto’s Tenryuji Temple, as they compete in a brutal survival game called “Kodoku.” The goal? Be the last one standing to claim a 100 billion yen prize.
At the center of this carnage is the protagonist Shujiro Saga (Junichi Okada), a desperate father fighting to save his ailing family.

Junichi Okada, who serves as the series’ lead actor, producer, and action choreographer, expressed his excitement about the renewal. “I’m pleased to see that Last Samurai Standing has reached global audiences,” Okada said. “I’m excited to get back into this wild world and once again charge into battle with the production team. We hope to make the next season even more energetic and action-packed. Director Michihito Fujii showed his sentiment, promising that the stakes will only get higher.
“There’s no doubt that Season 2 will be even bigger and better than the first,” Fujii said.
With the first season ending on a massive cliff hanger as Shujiro rushes toward Tokyo and new alliances form, fans can expect even more intricate swordplay and political conspire.
