Tamil actor Dhanush took to social media on June 8 to share a heartfelt message for retired tennis legend Rafael Nadal after watching the Netflix documentary ‘Rafa’. The post, which quickly drew attention online, touched on Nadal’s physical battles, mental strength, and the deeper meaning behind his famous on-court rituals.
Dhanush watched the Netflix documentary ‘Rafa’, which is based on the life of former tennis player Rafael Nadal. After watching it, he shared an emotional post on social media. In the post, Dhanush revealed that the documentary made him realize what Nadal went through throughout his career journey.
Regret over past reactions
In the post, Dhanush admitted that he had often lost his temper while watching Nadal’s matches without understanding the full picture. He wrote that watching the documentary and realising everything Nadal went through to give his all to the sport was overwhelming. He expressed regret for all those times he shouted at the TV when Nadal lost a point, a set, or a match, saying things like “Vamos Rafa, you could have done better” or “Why are you making this so hard on yourself?”
A new understanding of Nadal’s rituals
Dhanush said he now finally understands all the rituals and routines followed by Nadal, such as the perfectly placed water bottles, clearing the lines, adjusting his hair, and pulling his shorts. He wrote that these were never just superstitions. They were part of a battle against anxiety, stress, and a body that was constantly wearing him down.

On injuries and the chronic foot condition
Dhanush applauded Nadal for overcoming his limitations to reach the heights of his career. He wrote that with countless injuries and a chronic foot condition, Nadal still managed to climb the toughest of mountains. He added that imagining what Nadal could have achieved without that foot condition is almost impossible, and that 24 Grand Slams against 22 is a very thin margin.
Dhanush acknowledged that the stats are with Novak Djokovic and that many believe the game belongs to Roger Federer. But he wrote that for him, Nadal is and will always be the GOAT, calling him “my Phoenix.”
