He’s back in the cockpit again, and this time it’s official gossip from Hollywood’s biggest runway. Tom Cruise is once again suiting up as Maverick, because ‘Top Gun 3’ is really happening, and Paramount just dropped the news at CinemaCon in Las Vegas like a jet breaking the sound barrier.

Along with Cruise, producer Jerry Bruckheimer is also returning, keeping engine of the franchise fully loaded and ready for take-off.

The third film continues the momentum of ‘Top Gun: Maverick’, the 2022 mega-hit directed by Joseph Kosinski. The sequel was already quietly in development since 2024, with Ehren Kruger writing the script.

Kruger also worked on ‘Maverick’, alongside Eric Warren Singer and Christopher McQuarrie, so the same creative cockpit crew is still steering the story forward.

From 1986 legend to billion-dollar comeback

Tom Cruise first became Maverick in the 1986 original ‘Top Gun’, playing the fearless fighter pilot Pete “Maverick” Mitchell. After 36 years, he returned in ‘Top Gun: Maverick’. Here his character is seasoned instructor at elite flight school.

The film showed him training new group of young pilots for dangerous mission that pushes everyone to their limits.

The emotional core of the story also came from his connection with Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw, played by Miles Teller. Rooster is the son of Maverick’s late best friend, Pete “Goose” Bradshaw, whose death in the first film still haunts the story.

Together, Maverick and Rooster manage to complete the high-risk mission and return safely with their team.

A star-packed squad and a record-breaking legacy

‘Top Gun: Maverick’ introduced fresh squad of rising stars including Glen Powell, Lewis Pullman, Monica Barbaro, Danny Ramirez, Jay Ellis, Greg Tarzan Davis, Manny Jacinto, all playing elite Navy pilots.

The film also featured supporting performances from Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Charles Parnell, Ed Harris, Bashir Salahuddin. For many, it also became farewell moment for Val Kilmer who reprised his iconic role as Tom “Iceman” Kazansky in his final film appearance before his death in 2025.

Now, with ‘Top Gun 3’ confirmed, Hollywood is clearly not done flying high with Maverick just yet.
