Eight hours. That’s how long the newly released police footage runs, showing what really happened the night Justin Timberlake was pulled over in New York’s Hamptons in June 2024.
The release came despite his legal team trying hard to block it. They had argued that making the footage public would damage his privacy and reputation. But in the end, they backed down and agreed to a redacted version being shared under public records law.
The video was released by Sag Harbour police.
The stop that started it all
It began with a traffic stop in Sag Harbour, a wealthy beach village about 160 km from New York City.
Police say Timberlake ran a stop sign, veered out of his lane and smelled of alcohol when he stepped out of his BMW
That’s when things took a turn.
In the video, Timberlake calmly tells officers he had “one martini” and was simply following friends home.
When asked why he was in town, his answer was… very him.
“I’m on a world tour.”
“What do you do?” the officer asks.
“Hard to explain,” he replies, before finally saying: “World tour. I’m Justin Timberlake.”
The officer’s response? Surprisingly chill: “You are Justin Timberlake? Do you have a license with you?”
“These are really hard tests”
Then came the moment that’s now getting the most attention.
Timberlake was asked to perform field sobriety tests, walking heel-to-toe in a straight line and standing on one leg.
It didn’t go smoothly. He appears confused at times, struggling to follow instructions. At one point, he admits: “These are, like, really hard tests.”
He also tells officers: “I’m a little nervous”.
The video shows him apologising and looking visibly flustered.
“Why am I being arrested?”
Things escalated quickly.
Inside the police car, Timberlake asks the question that now echoes through the footage: “Why are you arresting me?”
Meanwhile, a woman who had been out with him and her husband arrives at the scene. She tries to hand him his phone but is stopped.
Then comes a moment straight out of pop culture chaos.
Realising what’s happening, she says in disbelief: “You’re arresting Justin Timberlake right now?”
And then, yes, really, she tries to charm the officers using his own music.
Referencing his hits, she pleads: “Can you guys please just do me a favor because you loved ‘Bye Bye Bye’ or ‘SexyBack’? Do me one favour!”
It doesn’t work.
A night in custody
Police allow her a brief moment with Timberlake before taking him to the station.
That’s where things get even more surreal.
“I’m going to be here all night?” he asks. “You guys are wild, man.”
He is told he will be held overnight.
In a quieter moment, he asks officers to keep the light on in his cell as they lock the door.
The legal battle over the video
The footage almost never saw the light of day.
Timberlake’s lawyers had filed a lawsuit to stop its release, arguing it would reveal “intimate, highly personal, and sensitive details”, cause “severe and irreparable harm” and lead to public ridicule and harassment.
But in a joint filing with Sag Harbour officials, they later admitted the video did not violate privacy laws and agreed to its release.
Sag Harbour authorities said they followed proper legal procedure, reviewing and redacting the footage to protect safety and privacy.
The final outcome of the case
Back in September 2024, Timberlake pleaded guilty, but not to the original charge.
His misdemeanor DWI charge was reduced to a noncriminal traffic violation for impaired driving.
As part of the deal, he paid a $500 fine, completed 25 hours of community service and had his license suspended for 90 days. He also agreed to make a public safety announcement about the dangers of drunk driving.
