Patrick Stewart is setting the record straight. After weeks of online speculation that ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ would mark his final acting role, the veteran actor has spoken directly about his future in the industry.
Stewart addressed the speculation head-on in a recent conversation. He revealed that he has no plans to step away from Hollywood anytime soon and that ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ would most certainly not be his last movie.
He did not dismiss the realities of aging in the industry, but made his intentions clear. Stewart said fewer roles become available for actors his age, but that he still receives interesting offers and enjoys being challenged by new work, citing his voice role in Riz Ahmed’s series “Bait.” He added that he could not imagine ever officially retiring, saying he would always and forever be an actor.
Where the rumours started
The retirement talk did not come out of nowhere. The speculation traces back to a discussion on Kristian Harloff’s podcast last November, where there was talk about the possibility of Stewart stepping away from acting after his next appearance as Professor X.
The claim resurfaced with more intensity recently. Rumours resurfaced online this week claiming the actor had completely retired from acting, with his appearance in “Doomsday” framed as the final role of his career. Neither Stewart nor his representatives had addressed the retirement claim directly before this, and the rumor kept circulating for months, resurfacing again with fans reacting as though it were new information.
Not the first time this has happened
This is not the first time Stewart has been linked to a farewell moment with this character. He stepped away from playing Professor X after 2017’s “Logan,” telling Entertainment Weekly at the time that he considered his run with the character finished. That announcement did not hold. Stewart returned to the role in 2022 for “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” and is doing so again now for “Doomsday.”
Career spanning decades
Stewart’s career stretches back further than most working actors today. He began acting in 1959 and has spent decades building his reputation across film, television, and theater. And, he built global recognition through two major franchises. He became a global star playing Captain Jean-Luc Picard in the “Star Trek” franchise before later taking on the role of Professor Charles Xavier in the “X-Men” films.
Stewart first brought Professor X to the big screen in 2000’s “X-Men.” He has reprised the role multiple times since then, with his 2022 return in “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” drawing a strong response from fans.
Stewart’s schedule remains full outside of the Marvel film. Along with filming “Avengers: Doomsday,” he has remained active in theater productions and voice acting, including a recent role in “The Sheep Detectives.” His current work also includes Shakespeare performances alongside his film and voice commitments.
