Legendary filmmaker Martin Scorsese has added a new title to his long list of career achievements: Emmy-nominated actor.

At 81, Scorsese is no stranger to awards. He’s won multiple Emmys in the past for his work behind the camera, but this time, the nod is for his on-screen appearance in the comedy series ‘The Studio’.

The nomination, in the category of Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series, came as a surprise to many, including Martin Scorsese himself.

The director’s youngest daughter, Francesca Scorsese, gave fans a peek into her father’s reaction on Instagram. Francesca, 25, shared candid moments from the day the nominations were announced.

One photo showed the list of nominees, with playful confetti graphics added over her dad’s name and face. “Our little actor,” she captioned the post.

In another post, Francesca captured a touching scene: Scorsese sitting in his home office, hands over his face in disbelief, while she smiled beside him.

Scorsese shares the guest actor category with some heavy hitters. His fellow nominees include Jon Bernthal for ‘The Bear’ and four other stars from ‘The Studio’: Bryan Cranston, Dave Franco, Ron Howard, and Anthony Mackie.

‘The Studio’, created by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, is a sharp, satirical comedy that pokes fun at Hollywood’s inner workings. Scorsese appears as himself in the show’s first episode.

According to Rogen, the casting process for guest stars was organic but also a bit of a dream list. “We would write it to our idealised version of who we could get, and very often we actually got those people, which was shocking,” Rogen said in an interview.

Rogen also mentioned how refreshing it was to see celebrities, including Scorsese, embrace the joke. “People in general are pretty cool to make fun of themselves and Hollywood, and seem to get the joke, which was nice.”

Though Scorsese is popular for directing classic films like ‘Goodfellas’, ‘Taxi Driver’, and ‘The Departed’, he is no stranger to television accolades.

He won his first Emmy in 2011 for directing ‘Boardwalk Empire’ and picked up two more the following year for ‘George Harrison: Living in the Material World’, a documentary special. He has also received Emmy nominations for other nonfiction projects like ‘No Direction Home: Bob Dylan’.

The 2025 Emmy Awards will take place on September 14, airing live on CBS and streaming on Paramount+ starting at 8 PM.

Meanwhile, ‘The Studio’ is currently available to stream on Apple TV+.
