Keanu Reeves is in negotiations to lead an untitled Lego film at Universal Pictures. Josh Cooley, who directed Toy Story 4, is attached to helm the project.
Reeves and Cooley previously worked together on Toy Story 4, where Reeves voiced Duke Caboom, a stuntman action figure billed as Canada’s Greatest Stuntman. That film, released in 2019, was a major success. Toy Story 4 grossed more than a billion dollars at the global box office and received a Best Picture Oscar nomination.
Reeves recently reprised his role as Duke Caboom in Toy Story 5, which released exclusively in theaters on June 19, 2026. The new Lego film would mark the second time the two collaborate on a major toy-based franchise.
What is known about the film
The project is described as a live-action hybrid movie. Plot details are under wraps, though it will be a mix of live-action and animation. It is currently unclear whether Reeves will appear on screen or voice a character in the film.
Jill Wilfert and Ryan Christians will produce through The Lego Group. On the studio side, Universal’s Matt Reilly, executive vice president of Production Development, and Jacqueline Garell, director of Production Development, are expected to oversee the project. Universal declined to comment on the deal.
How the project came together
Universal reportedly built the character specifically around Reeves. After weeks of conversations, the studio brought in Josh Cooley to pitch his vision, which reportedly convinced Reeves to join.
Sources say Reeves began as a long shot for the studio. After he showed interest, Cooley was brought on board, and that move sealed the deal for the actor.
