Hollywood unions blast ABC for silencing Jimmy Kimmel over Charlie Kirk remarks

It began as just another late-night episode. A few jokes, a few sharp lines, and Jimmy Kimmel doing what he does best: stirring the pot with humor. But this week, one of his comments set off a storm that has now pushed ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ completely off the air.

The controversy erupted after Jimmy Kimmel spoke about the shooting of right-wing activist Charlie Kirk. His remarks quickly spread online. And, they drew outrage from conservative figures, local broadcasters, and even a top government official.

By Wednesday night, ABC, owned by Disney, announced that the show would be pulled “indefinitely.”

That decision has opened a much bigger debate than just one comedian’s late-night joke. It has turned into a battle over freedom of speech, artistic independence, and the power corporations and regulators hold over television.

The first to roar in defense of Kimmel were the people who help shape his nightly words: the ‘Writers Guild of America West and East.’

In a strongly worded statement, the unions condemned ABC’s decision. They called it nothing less than corporate censorship.

“The right to speak our minds and to disagree with each other, to disturb, even, is at the very heart of what it means to be a free people,” the statement read. “It is not to be denied. Not by violence, not by the abuse of governmental power, nor by acts of corporate cowardice.”

The guild also reminded ABC of the role writers play in the network’s success. “Our words have made you rich. Silencing us impoverishes the whole world,” the statement added, before declaring that the WGA “stands with Jimmy Kimmel and his writers.”

Soon after, another powerful voice joined the fight. SAG-AFTRA, the union that represents actors, performers, and media artists, released its own statement blasting the suspension.

“Our society depends on freedom of expression,” the group said. “Suppression of free speech and retaliation for speaking out on significant issues of public concern run counter to the fundamental rights we all rely on.”

The statement warned that democracy itself weakens when different viewpoints are silenced. “The decision to suspend airing ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ endangers everyone’s freedoms,” the union wrote. “SAG-AFTRA stands with all media artists and defends their right to express diverse points of view.”

The drama had actually started earlier in the day when Nexstar, a major local TV station owner, pulled the late-night show from its broadcasts. Andrew Alford, president of Nexstar’s broadcasting division, said Kimmel’s remarks were “offensive and insensitive” and not “in the public interest.”

So what exactly did Kimmel say?

On Tuesday, during his monologue, Kimmel addressed the shooting of Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University on September 10. Kirk, a high-profile conservative activist, was killed by a young man whose motives remain under investigation.

Kimmel accused some on the political right of twisting the narrative. “We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it,” he said.

The line quickly traveled across social media. And as social media does, it sparked both fierce backlash and strong defense.

For now, ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ remains off air. Its future is uncertain. But the backlash from Hollywood unions and free speech advocates ensures the fight is far from over.
