Hollywood was buzzing at the Samuel Goldwyn Theatre in Beverly Hills as actor Dwayne Johnson and his co-stars premiered their latest film, ‘The Smashing Machine’.

Unlike a typical action-packed fight movie, Johnson called it a “life movie,” telling reporters that it’s really about the struggles, triumphs, and resilience of one man: UFC legend Mark Kerr.

The biopic follows Kerr’s incredible journey from the late 1990s, when he became one of the most feared fighters in the world, to his very human struggles outside the octagon. Kerr’s story includes a battle with painkiller addiction, two near-fatal overdoses, and the long road to recovery.

“Fighting just happened to be what he did, and he was amazing at it,” Johnson explained. “But the story is really about pressure, pain, and addiction. He was once the best fighter on the planet, then he lost, and he struggled to accept that. He overdosed twice and is lucky to be alive. I’m so grateful he is here today.”

Emily Blunt, who plays Kerr’s former girlfriend Dawn Staples-Kerr, also spoke about her unique experience preparing for the role. Unlike many biopics where actors must imagine their character’s life, Blunt had the real Dawn to turn to.

“I’ve played people who are no longer with us,” she said. “But having Dawn to talk to, to hear her whole story from childhood onwards, was amazing. She patiently answered all my questions, even the very personal ones, and that helped me bring her to life on screen.”

Writer and director Benny Safdie, who teamed up with Johnson to develop the script in 2023, shared why Kerr’s story drew him in. “Mark is a rare person,” Safdie said. “He can go into the ring and completely dominate someone, but then step out and reflect on why he did it. He talks about his emotions almost like a psychoanalyst. That combination of raw power and deep insight fascinated me. I wanted to explore that on screen, and I hoped the audience would feel it too.”

Safdie added that telling Kerr’s story was a personal experience as well. “Going through Mark’s journey allowed me to experience those feelings myself. If I could do that for an audience, I felt it would be very special.”

Mark Kerr himself praised the cast and Safdie for staying true to his life story. “Dwayne was like a sponge, absorbing everything,” Kerr said. “And Emily is an ‘emotional detective.’ She digs deep and uncovers these little details that bring the story to life.”

The premiere was a special moment for both Kerr and his ex-wife, who reunited on the red carpet alongside their on-screen counterparts.
