Daniel Radcliffe has been famous since he was 11; his son thinks Harry Potter is just some kid on a DVD cover

Daniel Radcliffe is one of the most recognised actors on the planet. He played Harry Potter in eight blockbuster films over a decade, starting at the age of 11. He has a Tony Award on his shelf and millions of fans around the world. His three-year-old son has absolutely no idea.

Just a dad at home

Radcliffe has spoken openly about his son’s total ignorance of his father’s fame. In a recent appearance on the ‘Happy Sad Confused’ podcast, he described his home life in simple terms.

“Right now, I’m just his dad and he has no idea what I do,” he said. “First of all, you know your job is a little bit bulls*** if you can’t explain it to a kid.”

He went on to explain how he tries to make the concept of acting make sense to a toddler. His son knows what policemen, doctors, and firefighters do. Acting is harder to pin down. “We help tell stories, like the stories in your books, but we sort of act them out. That’s sort of what we’ve landed on as an explanation,” Radcliffe said.

The DVD on the kitchen table

One incident has stood out as a test of how long this anonymity can last. Radcliffe told ‘The New York Times’ that someone recently handed him a Harry Potter DVD to sign. The disc sat on the kitchen table for a couple of days.

His son was nearby at one point, and Radcliffe saw an opportunity. He pointed at his younger face on the cover and asked his child, “Who’s that?”

The boy did not recognise him.

“He didn’t, which is great,” Radcliffe said. “For as long as I can just be his dad, and he won’t know me as anything else, I will maintain that for as long as I can.”

A glimpse on TV

The secret is not completely airtight. During the 2024 Olympic Games, Radcliffe’s son caught a commercial for his NBC comedy series ‘The Fall and Rise of Reggie Dinkins’ while watching television. Radcliffe had left the room at the time.

According to Radcliffe, his son spotted him in the corner of the screen and said, “Dada?” with what Radcliffe described as a tone of someone checking they were not imagining things. It was a small crack in the wall, but the full scale of his father’s fame remains unknown to the child.

Why Radcliffe is keeping it that way

Radcliffe has been clear about the reasoning behind his approach. He wants his son to know him as a father first and a public figure second, or not at all for as long as possible.

In an interview with ‘WSJ Magazine’, he reflected on his own experience growing up as a child star alongside co-stars Rupert Grint and Emma Watson. He said the three of them are often held up as proof that child stardom can turn out fine, but he was careful to put that in context.

“Yes it can be, but we all worked really hard on ourselves to make it fine,” he said. “I honestly wouldn’t want my son to act or to become famous.”

He described his own childhood on the Harry Potter set as unusually protected. The same crew stayed on the production for roughly ten years and genuinely cared about the young cast. His parents also struck the right balance, treating the experience as special while staying grounded about its unusual pressures.

No acting career, please

Radcliffe and his partner, actress Erin Darke, are both clear that they do not want their son following them into the industry. Darke is 41 and Radcliffe is 36. The two have been together since meeting on the set of the 2013 film ‘Kill Your Darlings’. Their son was born in April 2023.

Appearing on ‘The View’ in March 2026 to promote ‘Reggie Dinkins’, Radcliffe was asked directly whether he hoped his son might become an actor. “I would rather he isn’t,” he said plainly.

He acknowledged the contradiction in two passionate working actors raising a child who might develop the same passions. “Me and Erin are both actors, so he’ll see us being passionate and loving our jobs,” he admitted.

But his concern was specific. He said too many actors tie their sense of self-worth to their work and their image. He wants his son to find a job where his identity is not built around public approval.

“I would love for him to get a job where his sense of identity and self-worth is not as tied to that,” he said.

He did offer one exception. If his son ended up working behind the camera, Radcliffe said he would genuinely love that.

Harry Potter and the HBO question

When it comes to the Harry Potter franchise itself, Radcliffe is open to his son engaging with the story eventually. He just does not plan to make it happen himself.

He told ‘The New York Times’ that he would read the books to his son if the boy asked for them. “If he gets into them, totally, of course I will,” he said.

On the question of the films, he has a preference. HBO is set to release a new Harry Potter television series, with a Christmas 2026 debut confirmed and a new cast in place. Radcliffe has said he would rather his son watch the HBO version than his own movies. “Hopefully I can just put that on, and he doesn’t have to watch me in it,” he said.

He has been supportive of the new production. He wrote a letter to Dominic McLaughlin, the 11-year-old cast as the new Harry Potter, offering support as the boy prepares for a decade-long role.

Quitting smoking and 5:30 am starts

Becoming a father has changed Radcliffe’s daily life in concrete ways. He gave up smoking after years of running on cigarettes and coffee. He said intrusive thoughts about not being around for his son’s childhood pushed him to stop.

His mornings now start early. His son’s night-light changes from blue to yellow at 6:30 AM. Before the light switches, Radcliffe is already awake at around 5:30.

He described the exhaustion of early parenthood as unlike anything he had expected but said it has also been the best experience of his life. “I never thought it would be possible for a creature to make me so tired and me still just love that thing so much,” he said in an interview with E! News.

A normal life, for now

Radcliffe and Darke are based in New York City and have kept their family life deliberately private. Their son’s name has not been made public. Radcliffe has described the current phase of fatherhood as beautiful precisely because of its ordinariness.

“This is a beautiful time when he is not aware of me being anything else than his dad,” he said. He also acknowledged the inevitable end to that simplicity. “That’s going to be really, really hard,” he added.

For now, though, the boy who lived is just someone’s dad. And his son is perfectly happy not knowing otherwise.
