Chasing her dreams, her ambitions and becoming the best version of herself was more important than breaking a glass ceiling, according to actor Priyanka Chopra who was invited to speak for the 11th edition of The Penguin Annual Lecture here on Tuesday. The theme of the lecture at a packed Siri Fort auditorium was on the theme of chasing dreams and breaking the glass ceiling. Ironically, Chopra is the first woman invited to deliver the annual lecture.

“My father always used to ask me why do you want to fit into a glass slipper, when you can break a glass ceiling,” she said. At the 20-minute interaction with a televison anchor, she touched on various issues such as racism ~ she recalled being called “brownie” or “curry” when she was in school in America, and also about the gender pay gap.

Chopra expressed happiness at being the only female to make it to the top 10 of Forbes’ Celebrity List. She said, “I am very proud of myself that I have had the ability to work so hard that I can stand shoulder-to-shoulder with my male counterparts in the top 10 of India, but at the same time, there’s a question, why is there just one of me when there are so many of them in the industry.”

She also shared “PC’s 12 rules of becoming the best version of yourself” in her signature “sassy” style and gave tips on how to be fearless, ambitious, not to compromise, to let dreams fly and to fail and then rise like a phoenix.

She said the term “glass ceiling” annoys her as it takes all her achievements and hard work and puts it “into a box”, defined by a largely patriarchal society.

On the ban on ”Padmavati”, Chopra said she called director Sanjay Leela Bhansali and actor Deepika Padukone to show her support. Blaming the media for asking her questions about other films for the sake of TRPs, she quipped, “Why aren’t these questions asked to politicians? What can I do as an actor?”. Huge applause followed.
