Filmmaker Ramesh Sippy has finally revealed the reason why Jaya Bachchan had very few dialogues in the iconic film ‘Sholay’.
In an exclusive chat with IANS, Sippy said her silence in the movie was intentional. “Jaya Bachchan ji was playing a widow in ‘Sholay’, so it was natural that her character spoke very little. She only talked when someone spoke to her,” he explained.
When asked if this made her role underrated, Sippy was quick to disagree. “Not at all,” he said. “Even without many lines, Jaya ji conveyed her emotions perfectly through her eyes. Amit Ji (Amitabh Bachchan) also respected her character, because besides his action scenes, he had to keep in mind that she was a widow and the daughter-in-law of the household.”
Sippy added that the main focus of ‘Sholay’ was Sanjeev Kumar’s character seeking revenge after his family was killed by Gabbar Singh.
“The story was about his revenge, so it made sense that Jaya ji spoke only a few times. Her silence added to the dignity of her role,” he said.

The director also shared an interesting story about casting Amjad Khan as Gabbar Singh. At first, many people doubted the choice, thinking Amjad looked too small and meek compared to stars like Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra.
Sippy recalled, “People said, ‘So many big actors, and in front of them stands a mouse.’”
However, Amjad’s performance proved everyone wrong. His portrayal of Gabbar became legendary, and he won the audience over with his intensity. Sippy added, “Those who doubted him got a slap in the fac. He became the biggest star in that role.”
‘Sholay’, written by the celebrated duo Salim-Javed, went on to become one of the longest-running and most loved films in Indian cinema.
