Varun Dhawan has carved his path in Bollywood, following in the footsteps of his father, legendary filmmaker David Dhawan. But while he has made a name for himself, Varun credits much of his growth to his father’s guidance, both on and off the set.
In a recent chat with ANI, Varun reflected on the valuable lessons he learned while working closely with his dad. He recalled his early days as an intern on one of David Dhawan’s film sets in Delhi. Back then, Varun was eager to contribute ideas, sometimes even suggesting how shots should be executed.
“I remember once during my internship, I tried to suggest how a shot should be done. But it wasn’t his vision, and honestly, I wasn’t in a position to comment yet. I was too young,” Varun shared. His father, known for his strong creative vision, didn’t hold back. David reportedly told him, “Jab tum apni film banaoge ya jab ek mukaam pe phuch jaaoge, tab karlena ye sab… But for now, this is my set, and things will be done my way.”
At first, Varun admitted he felt a little disappointed. “Of course, I felt upset initially. But looking back, he was absolutely right,” he said.

Over the years, their relationship has evolved into a productive creative partnership, with Varun now valuing his father’s advice and perspective in shaping his craft.
Beyond reflections on his father, Varun is busy preparing for his next big release, ‘Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari’. The film stars Janhvi Kapoor, Rohit Saraf, and Sanya Malhotra, alongside Varun, and is slated to hit theaters on October 2.
