In the latest twist of the Kapur family saga, Priya Sachdev Kapur, widow of industrialist Sunjay Kapur, has taken her battle into the courtroom in a big way. She has filed a ₹20 crore defamation suit against her sister-in-law, Mandhira Kapur Smith claiming that Mandhira’s words on a popular podcast have caused her social humiliation and emotional distress.

The case, which also names the podcast host Pooja Chaudhri as a defendant, is already creating waves online.

The ₹20 crore lawsuit

On Thursday, Priya approached the Delhi High Court seeking damages of ₹20 crore. According to the court papers, Mandhira’s statements on podcasts, interviews, social media, and content republished across online platforms have “seriously harmed her reputation” and caused significant mental agony.

Priya’s suit also requests the court to stop Mandhira and the podcaster from publishing or sharing any further statements about her.

She has asked that all existing posts, podcasts, and social media content that allegedly defame her be removed immediately.

What sparked the legal action?

The controversy traces back to Sunjay Kapur’s death in London in June 2025. Shortly after, Karisma Kapoor, Sunjay’s ex-wife (married 2003-2016), filed suit claiming that Priya had submitted forged will keeping her and Sunjay’s children Kiaan Raj and Samara out of their rightful inheritance.

Amidst this legal tug-of-war, Mandhira appeared on the podcast InControversial with Pooja Chaudhri. There she allegedly made statements that Priya found defamatory. These claims, the lawsuit says, were shared widely across social media.

In addition to the civil suit, Priya has filed a criminal defamation complaint against Mandhira and another unnamed individual.

Priya Kapur’s legal battles are just getting started

Priya married Sunjay Kapur in 2017, and the couple had one son together. Now, she finds herself at the center of multiple legal battles. Besides her suit against Mandhira, she is defending herself against claims from Sunjay’s children with Karisma Kapoor. They allege that will she submitted is fake and intended to exclude them from Sunjay’s estate.

Sunjay’s mother, Rani Kapur, is also involved in proceedings related to the estate showing that this family feud spans generations.
