Veteran actress Soni Razdan has spoken openly about how her career took a sharp turn after she married filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt.
In a recent conversation with News18 Showsha, Soni shared that the industry began looking at her differently once she tied the knot, and the change was not always pleasant.
Soni revealed that she was doing well as an actor when she started out. She had been receiving good projects and building her space in films and television. But after marriage, things shifted.
“I suddenly wasn’t getting work anymore,” she recalled. At that time, she was told through people in the industry that she did not need to work since she had married into a well-known family.
The comment angered her. “Someone said, ‘Why does she need to work? She’s so and so’s wife.’ That made me so upset. I got really angry,” Soni said.
Fortunately, she soon got the chance to act in the popular television series ‘Buniyaad’, which put her back on the map. After that, she was seen in several memorable roles, but the sting of that early rejection stayed with her.

Soni also reflected on how her identity is often attached to her family rather than her own achievements. Without naming anyone, she explained, “All my life, even now, I’m somebody else’s somebody.”
The actress, who is the mother of writer Shaheen Bhatt and Bollywood star Alia Bhatt, shared that people often introduce her in relation to her daughter or her husband instead of her own work.
She said her biggest struggle has been to be recognised simply as Soni Razdan. “My fight has always been to be known for who I am. I’m very happy for my family and their success. I’m proud of them. But at the same time, I wish people also saw me for myself. That’s been the challenge all along.”
Despite the frustration, Soni has now learned to accept it with a sense of humour. “Earlier, I would get upset, but now I laugh about it. Maybe this was the journey written for me, and that’s okay,” she said with grace.
Soni Razdan married Mahesh Bhatt in 1986. The couple has two daughters, Shaheen and Alia. Mahesh Bhatt also has two children, Pooja Bhatt and Rahul Bhatt, from his first marriage to Kiran Bhatt.
