Bollywood’s veteran actor-turned-politician Shatrughan Sinha took a nostalgic trip down memory lane on social media remembering the legendary Raj Kapoor on his birth anniversary. Calling him “the greatest showman,” Shatrughan shared a touching post on X (formerly Twitter), saying, “Forever in our hearts, thinking of you today, ‘the greatest showman’ legendary & best #RajKapoor the great source of inspiration for me always.”

Memories from ‘Khaan Dost’

Shatrughan didn’t stop there. He fondly recalled his time working with Raj Kapoor in the 1976 action-drama ‘Khaan Dost’. The film, directed by Dulal Guha, follows Ramdin Pandey (Raj Kapoor), a simple-minded constable in Nasik, whose life turns chaotic when a dangerous inmate, Rehmat Khan (Shatrughan Sinha), convinces him to help in an escape plan.

Shatrughan added, “Reminiscing about working together in ‘Khan Dost’. You are truly missed. Profound regards to the great Kapoor family. Long Live Raj Kapoor! #BirthAnniversary.”

The film also featured notable actors like Mithu Mukherjee, Yogeeta Bali, Satyendra Kapoor, Sulochana Latkar, Asit Sen, Jagdish Raj, Maruti, Chandulal.

The journey of the showman

Raj Kapoor was the eldest son of Prithviraj Kapoor. He began his cinematic journey at just 10 years old with the 1935 film ‘Inquilab’. By 1948 he had launched his own banner RK Films and directed his first movie ‘Aag’, a musical drama starring Nargis, Premnath, and Kamini Kaushal.

Inspired by Charlie Chaplin, Kapoor often portrayed characters modeled on Chaplin’s iconic Tramp enchanting audiences. These included films like ‘Awaara’ (1951), ‘Shree 420’ (1955), ‘Mera Naam Joker’ (1970).

A legacy that lives on

Raj Kapoor’s contribution to Indian cinema was celebrated with the Padma Bhushan in 1971. Then he received the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1988. His legacy continues through his grandchildren Kareena, Ranbir, and Karisma Kapoor.
