Rashmika Mandanna has opened up about her decision to play Diya in the upcoming film ‘Cocktail 2’. The role marks a sharp departure from the intense, dramatic characters she is known for. And according to the actress, saying yes to it did not come easy.

A character unlike her usual work

Since the trailer dropped, audiences have taken a liking to Diya. The character comes across as warm, playful, and full of life. Fans have responded positively to the glimpses of her in the film. But behind the scenes, Rashmika had genuine doubts about whether this role was right for her.

“I was really scared because this is by far the most urban I’ve looked in cinema,” she said in a recent interaction.

The actress has built her career on emotionally driven, larger-than-life roles. Stepping into a light-hearted, urban space felt unfamiliar. That unfamiliarity, she admitted, made her hesitant at first.

The pressure of audience expectations

Rashmika said one of her bigger concerns was what fans might expect from her. Over the years, her films have set a certain tone. Audiences tend to associate her with serious, high-stakes performances.

“Because of my films thus far, I feel like the audience somewhere expect a very serious, dramatic sort of performance from me,” she said.

Diya sits on the opposite end of that spectrum. The character focuses on friendship, fun, and a kind of emotional lightness. It is a world built around everyday relationships rather than dramatic arcs.

Why she still said yes

Despite the fear, Rashmika made the call to take on the role. Her reasoning was straightforward. She had never done something like this before, and that was exactly the point.

“Because I’ve never done something like this before, I had to do it,” she said.

She also spoke about what she believes viewers are looking for right now. Audiences, she feels, want something they have not seen before from their favorite actors. Doing the same kind of work repeatedly, even when it works, is not always the answer.

“I feel like the audience are also looking for something surprising, something new, something very different. And that was one of the main reasons why I thought it was a perfect fit,” she added.

What ‘Cocktail 2’ represents

For Rashmika, ‘Cocktail 2’ is a creative risk taken with intention. She chose Diya not because it was comfortable, but because it challenged her. The film spotlights friendship and the kind of carefree energy that her previous work rarely explored.

Whether audiences agree with her choice will be clear once the film releases. For now, the early response to the trailer suggests the gamble may already be paying off.
