Director Amit Rai’s upcoming family drama ‘Ohh My Dog’ will now arrive in cinemas on August 7 instead of its earlier scheduled release on July 31. The makers announced the last-minute change just a few days before the film was set to hit the big screen.
According to people associated with the project, the decision was taken late on Sunday after the team reviewed the box office situation and theatre availability. The film stars Maahi Rai, son of Amit Rai, alongside acclaimed actor Pankaj Tripathi.
Lack of screens prompted the decision
The main reason behind the postponement is the heavy competition at theatres. Industry sources said that most cinema screens had already been booked by two major releases, The Odyssey and Dhamaal 4. Adding to the challenge, Spider-Man is also releasing on July 31, making the weekend even more crowded.
For a smaller film like Ohh My Dog, getting enough screens to reach audiences became a difficult task. The makers felt that releasing in such a packed week could affect the film’s visibility and overall performance at the box office.
Amit Rai explains why the team waited
Speaking about the decision, Amit Rai said that Ohh My Dog is designed as a family entertainer. Since the film targets the same audience that many of the bigger releases are expected to attract, the competition would have been extremely tough.
He explained that the film has the ability to connect with viewers, but without enough theatres, its promotional plans and release strategy would not work as intended. Rai said the movie has strong potential, but it needs proper space in cinemas to reach families.
