Filmmaker Karan Johar has always been open about becoming a father through surrogacy in 2017. His twins, Yash and Roohi, are now eight years old, and while he has spoken about his decision before, he recently shared more deeply about the emotional journey of parenthood and how he plans to explain their birth to them.
Speaking on the podcast ‘Soul Safar with Bhaav’, Karan reflected on the early days of talking to his children about how they came into his life. “At first, I said something sweet. I told them they came from Dada’s heart,” he said.
But as his daughter grew older and started to understand how babies are actually born, she questioned it. “She said it’s not possible, that you have to come from someone’s stomach,” he shared.
Still, she didn’t press him for more details.
Even at a young age, the children seemed to sense the uniqueness of their family. They call Karan’s mother “mumma,” even though they know she’s actually their grandmother.

Karan said that the full conversation about their birth hasn’t happened yet, but he believes his children already have some idea. “They’re not completely unaware,” he said.
Now, with his twins growing up, Karan Johar knows that a more serious conversation is coming, and he is ready for it.
“That day is coming soon. And I’ll face it with complete honesty,” he said. “I’ll explain everything clearly. I’ll tell them I’m proud of the decision I made. They haven’t missed out on love in any way. I’ve given them all the love a couple would. My mum and I have raised them with everything they need emotionally.”
For Karan, fatherhood has changed more than just his daily routine. It has changed how he looks at life. Once known for being a regular at glamorous Bollywood events and parties, Karan said he now finds his happiness at home.
“I used to try hard to impress people at parties. I thought that was the fun. But now I realise the real celebration is with my kids,” he said.
