When Karan Johar stepped onto the Met Gala red carpet this year, it wasn’t just another celebrity appearance. It felt like a full-blown Bollywood moment unfolding in the middle of global fashion’s biggest night. The filmmaker, known for drama both on and off screen, made sure his debut at the iconic Metropolitan Museum of Art was anything but quiet.

The Met Gala 2026 is famous for its over-the-top fashion, but Karan didn’t just blend in. He stood out. Dressed in a custom outfit by Manish Malhotra, he delivered a look that people couldn’t stop talking about all night.

The theme this year focused on fashion as art, and Karan clearly got the memo. Social media lit up within minutes, with fans saying he had “nailed the theme” better than many seasoned attendees.

The Met Gala is known for bringing together global icons from film, music, and design. And yet, Karan managed to carve his own space. No easy job in a room full of international heavyweights.

The Look: Drama, art, and a six-foot statement

Karan’s outfit, titled ‘Framed in Eternity’, was exactly what the name promised. Dramatic, artistic, and impossible to ignore. The structured jacket with bold shoulders gave a vintage power vibe, but the real showstopper was the cape.

And not just any cape. It stretched nearly six feet and was hand-painted, turning his outfit into a moving canvas.

He completed the look with eye-catching jewellery from his own label, Tyaani, a multi-gemstone necklace and matching rings that added just the right amount of sparkle.

But what really made the look interesting was the inspiration behind it. Karan revealed that the entire outfit was influenced by legendary painter Raja Ravi Varma. And suddenly, everything made sense.

“This was storytelling, not just fashion”

Speaking about his inspiration, he shared that Raja Ravi Varma’s work has always resonated with him because of its emotional depth.

“He painted feelings,” Karan said.

For him, this Met Gala debut wasn’t just about showing up in style. It was personal. He described the moment as something straight out of a dream going from a wide-eyed cinema lover to standing on one of the most famous red carpets in the world.

And if that wasn’t enough to keep him in the spotlight, his work life is just as busy. Karan is now preparing for the release of his next production, ‘Chand Mera Dil’. The romantic drama stars Ananya Panday and Lakshya, and is directed by Vivek Soni. The film is set to hit theatres on May 22.
