Gulshan Grover walked into a dinner table full of old industry names and walked out with a new round of talk about cinema going backwards in time.

While promoting his upcoming series ‘Matka King’, Gulshan Grover found himself discussing more than just his new project. At a recent dinner, he met Shatrughan Sinha, Rakesh Roshan and Shashi Ranjan. The gathering was casual, but the conversation quickly shifted toward films, past roles, and present trends.

Grover said he arrived late to the dinner, and Shatrughan Sinha immediately brought up the film ‘Dhurandhar’. According to Grover, Sinha told him that he should have been part of it. Sinha also reportedly said Grover would have suited the role of Rehman Dakait, which was played by Akshaye Khanna in the film.

Grover agreed with the suggestion during the conversation, saying even the audience might feel the same.

“Old era is coming back”, says Grover

Speaking about current trends, Grover linked the discussion to what he sees in today’s films and fashion. He pointed out how bell-bottom trousers are back in style, along with remade songs and familiar performance styles.

He described it as a cycle where things from earlier decades are returning in new forms. According to him, even the way characters are written and shown is starting to resemble older cinema again.

Grover said many “era-type” characters are appearing again on screen. He also mentioned that certain film settings, including traditional drums and background elements once common in older movies, are being used again.

In his view, these were once considered outdated, but now they are back in circulation.

He added that earlier cinema often showed similar patterns and styles repeatedly, and what was once left behind is now being reused in modern storytelling.
