Dhurandhar 2 certification rumours: Online UA 16+ certificate misleads fans, Ranveer Singh sequel still shooting

Screengrab from the teaser

Fans of the Dhurandhar franchise have been buzzing online after reports claimed that ‘Dhurandhar 2’ has changed its tone to secure a UA 16+ certificate and that the runtime is now locked. But hold your popcorn. These rumours are off the mark.

India Today has reported that the certificate floating online is not for the sequel at all. Instead, it’s for the television premiere of the first film, which explains the confusing details like the different runtime and rating.

A media reports revealed that ‘Dhurandhar 2’ hasn’t even been submitted for certification yet. Shooting wrapped up only last week, and the final touches are still being filmed. So any talk of a final runtime or UA 16+ rating for the sequel is premature.

Title confusion adds to the chaos

Part of the misunderstanding comes from the film titles. The sequel is officially being certified under the name ‘Dhurandhar: The Revenge’, as shown in earlier teaser clearances.

But the certificate that went viral on February 9 mentions just ‘Dhurandhar’, confirming it’s the original movie, not the Ranveer Singh starrer.

TV version vs theatrical version

For context, the original ‘Dhurandhar’ had a runtime of 214 minutes when first certified. After members of the Baloch community raised objections to some dialogues, the film was edited and re-certified at 208 minutes and 56 seconds.

Now, for its television debut, the runtime has been trimmed further to 208 minutes. And the rating? It’s been modified from ‘A’ to UA 16+.

This is standard procedure because an ‘A’-rated film cannot air on TV.

The edits included muting certain expletives and trimming sequences that were considered unsuitable for a family audience.

When will fans see it on TV?

Following the usual 90-day window between theatre and television release, the first ‘Dhurandhar’ is set to hit your TV screens in the first week of March. The satellite rights have been bagged by Star Gold. So expect the premiere there.

‘Dhurandhar 2’ is almost here

While the first film gets its TV moment, ‘Dhurandhar 2’ is gearing up for a big theatrical release. The Ranveer Singh-led action drama hits cinemas on March 19.

Fans can also look forward to a star-studded cast including Akshaye Khanna, Sanjay Dutt, R. Madhavan, Arjun Rampal, and Sara Arjun.

So, the moral of the story? Don’t trust every viral CBFC certificate online. The Dhurandhar 2 hype is real, but the online certificate chatter? Just a case of mistaken identity.
