Anushree Mehta to direct remake of Rajesh Khanna’s ‘Bawarchi’

Rajesh Khanna and Jaya Bachchan in 'Bawarchi'

Rajesh Khanna’s classic film ‘Bawarchi’ is set to be remade, with filmmaker Anushree Mehta at the helm of the project. Originally directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee in 1972, ‘Bawarchi’ starred Rajesh Khanna alongside Jaya Bachchan and Asrani. Notably, it was itself a remake of Tapan Sinha’s 1966 Bengali film ‘Galpo Holeo Satti’, featuring Rabi Ghosh.

Expressing her enthusiasm for the project, Anushree stated, “When my business partner Abir Sengupta (Jaadugar Films), Sameer Raj Sippy, and I embarked on the journey to produce these three iconic films, our commitment was unwavering—to recreate them with utmost reverence and affection. When discussing ‘Bawarchi’, Abir and Sameer suggested that I take the reins as the writer-director.”

“They were confident that I could narrate the story in a manner that honors the original while resonating with modern audiences. Aligned in our vision, I eagerly accepted the role of writer-director,” she added.

Anushree Mehta emphasized that the adaptation would reflect her “confidence, honesty, and sensitivity.”

“The essence of remaking a film lies in adapting it to contemporary times while preserving its core values. Just as Hrishida did in his era, recreating ‘Bawarchi’ to resonate with audiences then, my endeavor is to infuse the timeless tale of ‘Bawarchi’ with relevance for today’s family audiences. My goal is to craft an unforgettable, wholesome family experience,” she elaborated.

The casting process for the film is currently underway. (ANI)
