In the golden age of Bollywood, millions admired Rajesh Khanna from afar, but for Anita Advani, India’s first superstar was not just a screen idol. He was the man who shaped her youth, her emotions, and her choices in love.
Speaking recently on the show ‘REEL Meet REAL’, Anita opened up about her personal journey with the late actor, offering rare insight into a relationship that has long been whispered about but rarely explained in detail.
“I was only a teenager when I met him,” she recalled with a mix of nostalgia and emotion. “It was like a storm, a whirlwind romance. He left such a strong impression on me that no one else ever seemed to matter. No one could ever match him in my eyes.”
Their paths crossed again and again, almost as though fate itself was scripting the story. Years later, when Khanna’s life was quieter and lonelier, the two reconnected.
“When everyone in his life had gone, when his family was not around, we found each other again,” she said. That reconnection wasn’t fleeting. They went on to live together for about 12 years.

Anita described the bond not just as love, but as something deeply emotional, especially considering how young she was when it all began. “I came from a conservative family,” she explained. “At that age, I thought he was my whole world. When people showed interest in me later, I just couldn’t see them the same way. I had this mental block. I couldn’t even accept another man touching me.”
The relationship, as she tells it, was not always easy, but it defined her in profound ways. She remembered Khanna as “one in a million,” someone she could never replace. “I couldn’t have asked for a better man than him,” she said, reflecting on the years they spent together.
For Anita Advani, the connection was not just about romance but about admiration for Rajesh Khanna, a man who was larger than life, yet human in private. “He was everything for me,” she admitted.
