Woh 7 Din is a 1983 Hindi-language romantic drama directed by Bapu. It was Anil Kapoor’s first lead role in a Hindi film. Before Woh 7 Din, Kapoor had done a few films, but this was the one that truly introduced him to audiences. He credited it with giving him his first real chance to be seen and accepted.

Kapoor had made his Bollywood debut with a small role in the romance Hamare Tumhare in 1979. Despite several small appearances across languages, it was Woh 7 Din that put his name on the map. His first three major successes were Mashaal, Woh 7 Din, and Meri Jung, which collectively made him a star.

A family production from the start

The film was produced by Surinder Kapoor and Boney Kapoor under their banner. Getting it made was not easy. Boney Kapoor traveled to Chennai to acquire the remake rights from Tamil director K. Bhagyaraj. When funds fell short, actor Sanjeev Kumar stepped in with financial assistance of Rs. 1.25 lakh to help secure the adaptation.

Anil Kapoor had been declined by many producers and directors at the time, who felt his slim build made him look too young to be a film hero. Several actresses also refused to work opposite a newcomer until Padmini Kolhapure was finalised.

On the anniversary, Kapoor specifically acknowledged his family’s support. He thanked late director Bapu Saab for believing in him, K. Bhagyaraj for writing a beautiful story, and his father Surinder Kapoor and brother Boney Kapoor for producing the film.

Kapoor also paid tribute to his co-stars. He expressed that he is grateful to Padmini Kolhapure and Naseeruddin Shah, adding that he misses them a little extra every time Woh 7 Din is celebrated. He said they made a newcomer like him feel welcome and gave him the confidence he needed to connect with audiences.

What the film was about

Woh 7 Din is a remake of the 1981 Tamil film Andha 7 Naatkal, directed by K. Bhagyaraj. The story follows Dr. Anand, who discovers on his wedding night that his bride Maya is in love with someone else. Kapoor played Prem, a struggling singer with ambitions of becoming a music director. The music for the film was composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal, with lyrics by Anand Bakshi.

The role was initially offered to Mithun Chakraborty in 1982, but his increased asking fees following the success of Disco Dancer led to the part going to Anil Kapoor instead.
