Veteran actor Alok Nath, popularly known for his roles in hit films like ‘Hum Aapke Hain Kaun’ and ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’, has been given temporary relief by the Supreme Court.

On Tuesday, September 16, the court granted him interim protection from arrest in connection with a fraud case in Haryana.

The case is linked to a multi-level marketing scheme in Sonipat. Earlier, actor Shreyas Talpade had also received protection from arrest in the same matter.

Along with Alok Nath and Talpade, thirteen other people, including actors and brand ambassadors, are facing charges.

The complaint was filed by a 37-year-old man named Vipul Antil from Sonipat. He alleged that Alok Nath and Shreyas Talpade were brand ambassadors for the Human Welfare Credit Cooperative Society Ltd., which promised secure saving schemes.

According to Antil, their involvement encouraged many people to invest money in the company.

The FIR in this case was registered on January 22 under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, including cheating and criminal breach of trust. The cooperative society, registered in 2016 under the Multi-State Cooperative Societies Act, offered products like fixed deposits and recurring deposits.

At first, investors reportedly got returns, but by 2023 the payments allegedly stopped, creating panic among depositors.

The Supreme Court has not only protected Alok Nath from arrest but also sent notices to the governments of Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and the Centre. The court has asked them to respond to the matter.

The Haryana Police have also been directed to file their reply. The hearing will continue on the next scheduled date.

In 2018, during the Indian #MeToo movement, writer-producer Vinda Nanda accused Nath of rape. Several other women alleged sexual misconduct against him, leading to rape charges being filed by the Mumbai Police.
