Do you remember that strict professor who schooled Aamir Khan for not giving long answer in ‘3 Idiots’ who made everyone laugh with his witty lines? Achyut Potdar, the actor who brought that unforgettable character to life, passed away on Monday in Thane, Mumbai, at the age of 91.
His death came after his family admitted him to Jupiter Hospital for health issues. His final rites are going to take place in Mumbai on Tuesday.
Achyut Potdar’s journey in the entertainment world was as remarkable as his characters on screen. Over his long career, he acted in more than 125 Hindi and Marathi films and appeared in nearly 100 television serials.
While many will remember him for the iconic engineering professor in Aamir Khan’s blockbuster ‘3 Idiots’, Potdar’s contributions spanned decades and genres.
Before the limelight, Achyut Potdar led a life full of diverse experiences. After completing his university education, he became a professor in Rewa, Madhya Pradesh, and later joined the Indian Army, retiring as a captain in 1967.

Following his military career, he worked with Indian Oil as an executive for nearly 25 years, retiring at the age of 58 in 1992. Even while juggling corporate responsibilities, Potdar stayed connected to the arts. He participated in theatre, plays, and cultural events organized by Indian Oil.
Interestingly, Potdar entered the film industry relatively late, at the age of 44, after years in the army and corporate world. Acting was more than just a hobby for him. It was a passion he pursued with discipline and dedication.
Over the years, he became a regular feature in Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s films.
Some of his notable films include ‘Dabangg 2’, ‘Ferrari Ki Sawaari’, and, of course, ‘3 Idiots’. On television, he played diverse roles such as Jayaprakash Narayan in ‘Pradhanmantri’ and appeared in serials like ‘Amita Ka Amit’ and ‘Aandolan’.
