Fresh from the success of the show of strength at Ghaziabad on Friday, Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra held a roadshow at Fatehpur in central Uttar Pradesh on Saturday.

Former Samajwadi Party leader Rakesh Sachan is the Congress candidate from Fatehpur. The election in the Fatehpur constituency will be held in the fifth phase of the seven-tiered Lok Sabha polls on May 6.

Before launching her road show, Priyanka Vadra interacted with women at Aong in Fatehpur where she was apprised of the problems and issues being faced by the women. Priyanka asked them to exercise their discretion while casting their votes.

Priyanka hit out at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government at the Centre for their propaganda in the last five years. She said the party had made many promises in the run-up to the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. These included the promise of Rs 15 lakh being deposited in the bank accounts of the poor and creating 2 crore jobs annually. The fact of the matter is that the condition of farmers has deteriorated and none of the promises had been fulfilled. She queried whether Rs 15 lakh has been deposited in the bank accounts of the poor and needy. Priyanka said in the light of these failures of the BJP administration the onus is on the voters to elect the right candidate and one who works for their welfare.

Addressing a roadside meeting during her road show, the Congress general secretary stressed on the need of creating awareness. She said the biggest step towards nationalism is awareness. Priyanka attacked the BJP leaders for discriminating among martyrs. She said if the BJP leaders were nationalists then they should have honoured all the martyrs whether they were Hindus, Muslims or whether the martyr is the father of an opposition leader.

Before reaching Fatehpur for the roadshow, Priyanka arrived at Ahirwan Airport in Kanpur by a special flight. Reports said before leaving for Aong by road, Priyanka met the Congress candidate from Kanpur Sri Prakash Jaiswal, party’s candidate from Akbarpur Raja Ram Pal and other party leaders. Priyanka reportedly sought their feedback about their constituencies. She has reportedly agreed to address a public meeting in Kanpur. The proposed rally is likely to be held on any date between April 22 and 26.
