Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has once again sparked controversy by saying that the “Muslim League is a virus and one who is infected by it cannot be saved”.

“The Muslim League is a virus; one who is infected by this virus cannot be saved. Today, the main opposition Congress has been infected with this virus,” he said in a tweet in Hindi.

He further said, “if the Congress wins the Lok Sabha polls, the virus would spread across the country”.

Yogi Adityanath’s comments come a day after Congress President Rahul Gandhi filed his nomination from Kerala’s Wayanad on Thursday, a second seat besides his bastion in Uttar Pradesh’s Amethi.

For the first time, Congress president Rahul Gandhi will be contesting from two Lok Sabha seats.

After filing the nomination, Gandhi held a roadshow along with his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, which saw the participation of a massive crowd of party workers and supporters holding Congress and ally Indian Union Muslim League flags.

Wayanad is a Christian and Muslim dominated region.

Hours after Gandhi filed his nomination from Wayanad, Yogi Adityanath accused him of having a secret agenda in Kerala with the Muslim League, the same organisation which caused the country’s division.

The BJP leader was apparently referring to the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) which is a long-time member of the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) in Kerala, equating it with the pre-Partition Muslim League.

“The country attained freedom in 1947 after hundreds of years. But we also saw the country’s unfortunate division on the eve of Independence. It was the Muslim League which had caused the division,” he said.

“Today, Rahul Gandhi has filed nomination from a seat in Kerala where he has a secret agenda with the Muslim League, the same organisation which was at the root of the country’s division, he said.

“Where is this secret agenda between the Congress and Muslim league going to take the country? What sort of an atmosphere the Congress wants to build in this country?” he asked at a rally at Kashipur in Uttarakhand’s Udham Singh Nagar district.

Congress had won eight Lok Sabha seats in Kerala in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, besides two by its ally Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) and one by Kerala Congress (Mani) and one by Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP).

The party is hoping to further consolidate its position this time in the state.

Wayanad, this time will witness a triangular contest between Congress’ Rahul Gandhi, CPI’s PP Suneer and BJP’s Thushar Vellappally.

Kerala which has 20 Lok Sabha seats will go to polls during the 3rd phase of elections on April 23.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had earlier on Monday said that Congress president Rahul Gandhi is contesting the election from Wayanad as he was scared of contesting from constituencies dominated by the majority.
