The Congress on Saturday asked why the Election Commission (EC) let go off Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath with a light rap for his “Modiji ki sena” remark, adding that the Uttar Pradesh chief minister “insults” the Indian Army and the poll body writes a “love letter” to him.

The opposition party also came down heavily on the Election Commission’s communication to NITI Aayog vice-chairman Rajiv Kumar, saying he criticised the party’s proposed minimum income scheme NYAY and the poll body just told him to not “do it in the future”

“Has the MCC now become ”Modi Code of Conduct”. Adityanath insults the Indian Army — EC writes a love letter to him,” Congress’ chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala tweeted.

“NITI Aayog vice chairman criticises the NYAY scheme, the Election Commission says don’t do it in future. Why is the Election Commission shying away from showing the mirror of truth to those in power?” Surjewala asked.

The poll body on Friday let off Yogi Adityanath with a light rap for his “Modiji ki sena” remark, asking him to be more careful in the future.

The EC also told Adityanath that since he is a senior politician holding an important position, his remarks should reflect his stature.

Congress had urged the poll body to take cognizance of UP CM and Union minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi’s “Modi ki Army” comment and take “decisive” action to deter others from making such a statement.

If the EC does not take action against the two leaders, Surjewala had said, his party would “remind” the poll panel of its responsibilities.

On Friday, the Election Commission had found NITI Aayog Vice Chairman Rajiv Kumar’s remark on Congress president Rahul Gandhi’s minimum financial assistance scheme ‘NYAY’, violative of the Model Code of Conduct. It further directed him to desist from such actions in future.

On March 9, the EC had instructed all the political parties not to use defence personnel and their achievements for campaigning.
