The founder member of both the Jana Sangh and the BJP, 91-year-old Advani, along with late Atal Bihari Vajpayee, was instrumental in giving the BJP its present form at the national stage. The two, especially Advani, played a key role in taking the BJP from two seats in 1984 to 282 in 2014. He, along with Vajpayee, steered the party for decades and was the top leader in the BJP until 2014, when Modi took over.

Since Modi took over as the prime minister, Advani has been a member of the BJP’s Margadarshak Mandal or the Elders’ council. Advani was replaced with Amit Shah in Gandhinagar Lok Sabha constituency for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the seat he had won consecutively for six terms from 1998.
