Congress General Secretary Uttar Pradesh (East), Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who was touring Raebareli on Thursday, the Lok Sabha constituency of her mother and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, has emphasised that she has not fielded “weak” candidates on the seats under her adjudication, while talking to the news agency ANI.

“I’ve not said I am putting weak candidates. I’ve said very clearly that Congress is fighting this election on its own strength. I’d rather die than benefit BJP. We have chosen candidates that are either fighting very strongly or cutting the BJP votes,” said Priyanka.

In reply to a query about the video featuring her and a group of children raising anti-Modi slogans, she said that she had, in fact, stopped the children from raising the slogans.

“I stopped children from saying slogans which I think weren’t correct about the PM. The BJP edited the tape, removed the part where I was stopping them, and they’re making this allegation which is typical of them. What they do is twist the truth, what I do is I speak the truth,” she said.

Earlier on Thursday, BJP candidate from Amethi Lok Sabha constituency, Smriti Irani had lashed out at Vadra over the video.

Irani, who was in Amethi, said, “Doesn’t Mrs Vadra know that you can’t use children for political activity? What values are you giving to children? I’d say that cultured families should keep their children away from such a person.
