Delhi’s ruling Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP’s) Lok Sabha candidate from East Delhi seat, Atishi Marlena, has written to the Returning Officer of East Delhi Constituency complaining of “repeated violation of Model Code of Conduct by cricketer-turned-politician and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate from the same seat, Gautam Gambhir, by distributing pamphlets without details such as printer’s name and quantity,” reports news agency ANI.

The BJP had, on April 23, announced Gambhir as its candidate from East Delhi in place of the sitting MP Maheish Girri. He had joined the party on March 22.

However, the Aam Aadmi Party filed a criminal complaint against the former cricketer at the Tis Hazari Court on April 26 saying that his name figured twice in the electoral rolls. Atishi had said that it was a criminal matter and called for his (Gambhir’s) “immediate disqualification”.

“We have filed a criminal complaint in Tis Hazari Court against Gambhir,” she said, adding that Gambhir is holding two voter IDs, one from Rajendra Nagar and another from Karol Bagh, adding that he faced up to one year in prison for this offence.

Further to this, the Delhi Police on Saturday filed a case against Gambhir following the orders of the Election Commission (EC) for holding a rally without permission.

Gambhir had taken out a rally in East Delhi’s Jangpura on April 25 without obtaining permission, violating the model code of conduct, the EC had observed.

Delhi, which has seven Lok Sabha constituencies, will go to polls on May 12.
