Two days after the Yamuna crossed the evacuation mark of 206 metres, floodwaters reached relief camps in East Delhi’s Mayur Vihar area. In North Delhi, parts of Mukherjee Nagar, Kashmere Gate and Civil Lines were also inundated, with the rising river spreading further into its floodplains.

By Thursday evening, the river had swollen marginally to 207.42 metres at 7 p.m., up 0.05 metres in the past 24 hours, according to data from the Central Water Commission (CWC). The agency said water levels were expected to begin receding by 9 a.m. Friday, though they would remain above the evacuation threshold.

Flood control department officials said on Thursday that the release of water from the Hathnikund Barrage remained high through the day, with 1,34,563 cusecs discharged and the volume peaking at 1,78,806 cusecs over 24 hours. Officials added that the increased discharge is likely to raise water levels in Delhi within the next 22 to 48 hours.

The relief operations and evacuations measure continues in the city, with over 10,000 residents moved to safer locations, officials noted.

Flooded roads across the city — caused by the Yamuna’s overflow, blocked regulator drains and continued monsoon showers — disrupted traffic movement across the capital.

Delhi Traffic Police on Thursday announced the traffic diversions, advising commuters to take alternate routes due to rising water levels gushing into the Old Wazirabad Bridge on Wazirabad Road. Through a travel advisory posted on X, Delhi Traffic Police advised Delhiites to take the Signature Bridge for Mukarba Chowk, ISBT & Timarpur Road traffic.

The Delhi Metro, however, continued to run smoothly, carrying lakhs of passengers daily. Metro authorities posted on X that the approach road to Yamuna Bank Metro Station was inaccessible due to rising river levels, and advised commuters to plan their journeys accordingly and use alternate routes. The station itself remains operational, with interchange facilities available.
