With a thin attendance of party workers in weekly and monthly meetings of Delhi BJP, a perception seems to have grown that party’s state president Manoj Tiwari is losing hold over party workers.

Citing reference of attendance book at party office, sources told The Statesman that there has been a persistent and significant decrease in the number of participants at Delhi BJP meetings, held on both weekly and monthly basis.

“When the state general secretary was busy with Karnataka election, the state unit chief Manoj Tiwari convened a weekly meeting which was supposed to be attended by approximately 150 members. However, only 16 appeared. Also at monthly meeting in which nearly 500 were expected to participate, only 37 marked their presence,” a party leader said.

The reason he gave was discontent among many workers and not-so-cordial relationship Tiwari shares with senior leaders like Vijay Goel, Ramesh Bidhuri and Pravesh Verma, about which media has reported many times.

It is learnt that a couple of months ago district presidents of the BJP had approached Central leaders and pleaded for replacement of Delhi unit chief.

Sources added that even as the 2019 general elections are approaching, party workers understand that Tiwari has not raised any strong voice against BJP opponents in Delhi.

“There is also an issue of the under-representation of all areas of Delhi,” a BJP leader said. On 21 May, Tiwari at a weekly meeting asked the gathering why party were staying absent.

“Tiwari’s inabilities to manage team affairs is sending a wrong message to party’s core organisation. A couple of months ago RSS had reportedly warned the central leadership that BJP won’t be able to get a clear mandate in the national capital if the state unit president was not changed,” claimed a source.
