A 36-year-old Mumbai woman allegedly killed her daughter over suspicion of her being involved in a sexual relationship with her father.

The woman, who strangulated her 16-year-old, was arrested by the Kharghar police on Wednesday, while the crime reportedly took place on 4 March, according to a report in the Times of India.

The report further adds that following the post-mortem report, which stated the cause of death as choking, an FIR under the Indian Penal Code Section 302 (punishment for murder) has been registered.

As the police launched an investigation in the case, they found out that the girl was allegedly being assaulted by her mother for the past six months over the suspicion of her husband and daughter being in a sexual relationship. The cops were reportedly given this information by girl’s schoolmates.

The girl, who reportedly was subjected to physical torture, had attempted to take her life in February this year.

As the police questioned her regarding the matter, the accused mother confessed to the crime.

“When the accused beat her up a day after Holi, the girl retaliated and her mother ended up strangulating her with a dupatta,” TOI quoted Senior Inspector Dilip Kale as saying.

The police is also investigating the role of the deceased girl’s father.
