Local residents of Selep Tanki near Gangtok in East Sikkim have made history and set an example by building a school on their own expenses. Residents there said the idea was to provide good education and a good future to their children and make the school a model school in the state.

Selep Tanki locals on Monday handed over the primary school to the state Human Resource and Development Department amid a mall function here. Kazi Sherpa, a member of the Selep Tanki school committee, said that the school started in 1986, while in 2001, it permanently closed due to some official reasons.

“We realised the importance of the school in our area. Our children had to go to either the Burtuk School or the Enchey School and parents had to quit their jobs as they had to look after their children. The locals’ income was also hit and we felt that the identity of our village was at stake,” Mr Sherpa said.

The construction of the new school building began in November 2017 and it consists of classes from LKG to III, has two toilets and one staff room and presently has 42 students. The approximate cost of the construction was Rs 8 lakh, it is learnt. “We were also motivated by Chief Minister Pawan Chamling’s idea of ‘afnu gaonafaii banau’ (let’s make our own village).

The locals have really worked hard for this school and the credit entirely goes to them and their commitment. We are also thankful to our donors and the HRDD for providing us with teachers and other basic necessities,” Mr Sherpa said.

Additional Chief Secretary, GP Upadhyay, appreciated and congratulated the public of Selep Tanki and said they have set an example in the state. “We will extend our full support in making it a model school. We will be providing all the regular facilities to the school, including five teachers from the department,” he said.

Area MLAs, DR Thapa and Ugen Nedup Bhutia, Councillors Ashish Rai, Kunzang Namgyal and Rinsing Chewang Lepcha, members of the Sikkim SAI Sangathan, officials of the HRDD, and local residents were present in the function.
